Bringing your pet dog or cat to Great Britain?

The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) allows pet dogs, cats and ferrets to enter the UK without quarantine as long as they comply with the regulations. It also allows pet owners in the UK to take their dogs, cats and ferrets to other European countries and then return with them without need for quarantine.

For dogs, cats and ferrets entering the UK from any European or “listed” third country the key difference is that the current requirement to carry out a rabies blood test followed by a four-month wait before entry into the UK is no longer be required.

Eligibility

Dogs, cats and pet ferrets entering the UK from an EU or ‘listed’ third country must have completed the followng in this exact order:

• Be microchipped.
• Vaccinated against rabies.
• Have waited 21 days after vaccination before entering the UK.
• Hold an EU Pet Passport or EU Veterinary Certificate (Annex 2).
• Tapeworm Treatment (dogs only): before entering the UK, all pet dogs (including assistance dogs) must be treated for tapeworm. The treatment must be administered by a vet not less than 24 hours and not more than 120 hours (1-5 days) before its scheduled arrival time in the UK. There is no mandatory requirement for tick treatment. No treatment is required for dogs entering the UK from Finland, Ireland or Malta.

Pets entering from a “non-listed” third country must pass a blood test 30 days after vaccination followed by a 3 month wait.

Checklist

• Your pet has been micro-chipped and the microchip number correctly entered in the passport.
• Your pet has been vaccinated after the microchip was implanted.
• All your details correct and up-to-date on the mircochip.
• You found a vet in abroad that’s is able to treat your dog for tapeworm.
• Tapeworm treatment been done more than 24 but less than 120 hours before scheduled arrival time in the UK.
• Your vet has validated the entry for tapeworm treatment which must include the date and time of administration in the passport with an official veterinary stamp and signature.
• The tapeworm treatment record includes the name of the product used.
• You have a muzzle and have you familiarized your pet with it.

What you need (EX UK)

A pet passport or third country certificate showing that the pet has been micro chipped and vaccinated against rabies. Your pet may not leave or re-enter the UK until 21 calendar days have elapsed from the date of the rabies vaccination. The animal must also be a minimum of 12 weeks old before being vaccinated. Rabies boosters must be kept up to date. A muzzle is also compulsory.

What you need (EX Continent)

Dogs – A pet passport or third country certificate showing the dog has been treated against tapeworm not less than 24 hours, and not more than 120 hours before arrival in the UK.  Tick treatment is no longer required. A muzzle is also compulsory.

Cats & Ferrets – A pet passport or third country certificate is required. Tick and tapeworm treatment is no longer needed.
